What to Expect
- Yangmingshan National Park - Yangmingshan was called Chaoshan (Grass Mountain) during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, because it was covered with grass and seldom visited. After World War II, the government renamed the mountain Yangmingshan and built a park here. Yangmingshan National Park is the only park in Taiwan that has volcanic geography and hot springs. The magnificent mountainous scenery and comfortable weather have made Yangmingshan National Park a perfect summer resort. The natural beauty of the part has won its reputation as urban forest and the Taipei garden.
- Zhuzihu - Also called “Bamboo Lake”, is well known for its field of white calla lily flowers, which are at full bloom from March to May. At that time, the field of pure white calla flowers will draw your eyes away from the distant mountain views while you walk in the Zhuzihu Scenic Spot. Occasionally, you can find calla lily flower-related events being held at Zhuzihu Scenic Spot, such as Calla Lily Festival.
- Following the end of the Calla Lily season in late- May, hydrangeas are welcomed in the Zhuzihu area. Hydrangea blossom are regarded as a symbol of hope and an auspicious flower for families. They are also symbolically connected with gratitude and the desire to understand others. Hydrangeas usually bloom from the plum rain season (from mid-May to mid-June in Taiwan) to early summer. At that time, the clefts in the mountainside are blanketed with pale blues and purples. - Three kinds of Hot Spring - The three common types of hot springs include green sulfur (slightly green colored and only found in Beitou and Akita, Japan), white sulfur (a milky colored spring which make up the majority of springs in the area), and iron sulfur (transparent springs found around the Ding Beitou area).
- The main source of the “white sulfur” hot spring water that is used in most Beitou hot spring establishments today is Liuhuanggu and Longfenggu thermal valleys located further uphill in Yangmingshan National Park. The water temperature is usually between 56-90 °C, which is weakly acidic. It has curative effect on chronic skin diseases, arthritis and diseases only on female.
- Highly acidic “green sulfur” hot spring that is a major tourist attraction in Beitou and the source of the hot creek running through Beitou Hot Spring Park. The water temperature is above 90 °C, corrosive and curative effect on skin diseases, gout, muscle soreness and other diseases. Beitou Thermal Valley (also called Beitou Geothermal Valley or Hell Valley) belongs to this category.
- A third, “iron sulfur” spring source is located to the east of Beitou around Xingyi Rd. It is a neutral (weak alkaline) carbonate spring, temperature between 40-60 ° C and rich in iron minerals. With curative effect on neuralgia, skin disease, rheumatism, etc.
